Diabetes

At Every Step Podiatry we perform a Risk Assessment for our diabetes patients that provides results of nerve and artery health to ensure healthy feet.

How diabetes can affect your feet

Nerve damage that may cause loss of sensation and reduced ability to feel hot or cold.

Circulation problems could be caused by the hardening and blockage of arteries leading to reduced blood supply to the feet. This could lead to sores and infection taking longer to heal.

A reduced immunity may lead to an infection taking longer as white blood cells are not as effective.

The combination of nerve damage, circulation problems and reduced immunity may lead to a greater likelihood of an ulcer, gangrene and amputation.

How often should I see a podiatrist :

A regular check up with your podiatrist will help detect any changes early, before they become a problem.

Your podiatrist will examine your circulation by feeling foot pulses. They will examine your nerve sensation by testing pressure sensitivity, vibration and/or reflexes. Other tests will be considered if necessary. Your podiatrist will also look for general foot conditions which may lead to future problems.

If your podiatrist finds you have nerve damage, poor circulation, a wound or infection, you will need more frequent care. They will work with you to show you how to monitor your feet in between consultations.

Footwear advice :

The best type of footwear is one that fits well and protects your feet. Where possible wear shoes that are deep and broad enough, especially at the toes.

We have a range of shoe options at Every Step Podiatry to ensure the right fit for you. Our podiatrist can assist with fitting you the correct shoe to ensure healthy feet.

Please book today at our Ermington, or Rockdale clinic for a diabetic foot screening.
